Plenty of side hustles that pay “$30 an hour” pay far less when the money finally lands in your account. That’s because the advertised rate is only the start. After that, the platform takes its cut, the unpaid hours pile up, and the tax bill arrives in April.

So we did the math properly. We took the median pay for 15 popular side hustles from US government data and then subtracted platform fees, unpaid time, costs and self-employment tax. Finally, we ranked them by what you really keep for every hour you put in.

Frankly, the result surprised us. Some well-known gigs land close to the federal minimum wage, while a few quieter skills pay more than many day jobs. So here’s the full ranking, plus a calculator for your own numbers.

Quick answer
  • The 40% rule: take about 40% off any side hustle’s advertised hourly rate. That’s roughly what fees, unpaid time, costs and self-employment tax cost the typical gig, so plan for it.
  • The side hustles that pay best per real hour sell a skill at a desk, such as web development (about $27), editing ($23), marketing ($22) and writing ($21).
  • Rideshare driving and photography drop to about $7 an hour once car costs, waiting time and unpaid editing count. That’s close to the $7.25 federal minimum wage, too.
  • Going direct is the biggest raise. For example, moving tutoring off a 25% platform lifts real pay from about $10 to $14 an hour.
  • Set aside 25% to 30% of side hustle profit for tax if you’re in the US. After all, self-employment tax starts once you make $400 in a year.

Side Hustles That Pay the Most per Hour: The Full Ranking

Below is every hustle, ranked by real pay per hour. Here, “real pay” counts all the hours you work, paid or not, and comes after fees, costs and self-employment tax. It’s still before income tax, because that depends on your other earnings.

Typical rates, in this case, are US median hourly pay for each job from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025). For marketing, we used market research analysts, and for virtual assistants, we divided the median yearly pay for administrative assistants by 2,080 hours.

Notice two things here, though. First, the best side hustles that pay well all sell a skill, not your time or your car. Second, the hustles with the biggest platform cut fall furthest, no matter how good the advertised rate looks.

The Latest Data on What Side Hustles Pay

These are the figures behind the ranking, and we update them whenever new numbers come out.

Latest data (checked 25 October 2026)
  • 17% of US adults worked more hours or took another job in the past year because of higher prices (Federal Reserve, Economic Well-Being of US Households, May 2026).
  • Median hourly pay is $47.85 for web developers, $36.98 for writers, $20.84 for tutors and $17.08 for animal care workers (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 data).
  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), and you owe it once net earnings reach $400 (IRS).
  • Payment apps and marketplaces only send a Form 1099-K once you pass $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year. Even so, all side income is still taxable (IRS).
  • The federal minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour (US Department of Labor).

How We Worked Out What Side Hustles Really Pay

We used the same idea as our real hourly wage method: divide what you actually keep by every hour the work takes. Then we applied it to each hustle in four steps, as shown below.

Real pay per hour = (rate โˆ’ platform fee โˆ’ costs) ร— share of time that’s paid ร— (1 โˆ’ 14.13% self-employment tax)

In other words, each step is a leak in the bucket. Here’s how big each one is, from first to last.

Leak 1: The platform fee

Marketplaces bring you clients, but they charge for it. For instance, Fiverr freelancers keep 80% of each order, according to Fiverr’s own help page. Similarly, Wyzant takes 25% of tutors’ earnings (Wyzant), and Rover takes 20% from pet sitters (Rover).

Meanwhile, Upwork now uses a variable fee of 0% to 15% (Upwork). As a result, we used 10% as a middle estimate.

Leak 2: The unpaid hours

Still, this leak is the one most people miss. Writers pitch and edit, while tutors plan lessons and wait for no-shows. Similarly, drivers sit between rides, and photographers edit for hours after every shoot.

So we added an unpaid share for each hustle, from 10% for babysitting to 50% for photography. These are our estimates of typical setups rather than survey data, which is why the calculator lets you set your own.

Leak 3: Costs and driving

Most desk side hustles cost little, so we allowed 50 cents an hour for software and internet. However, hands-on work costs more: $3 an hour for a handyman’s materials and tools, and $5 for a photographer’s gear.

Rideshare is the real outlier, though. At about 20 miles per paid hour and 28 cents a mile, for example, the car costs $5.60 for every hour you drive. Again, that figure comes from our drive or fly cost-per-mile math, which adds AAA’s maintenance and tire costs to fuel.

Leak 4: Self-employment tax

Normally, an employer pays half of your Social Security and Medicare tax. A side hustle makes you the employer, so you pay both halves. As a result, the rate is 15.3%, charged on 92.35% of your profit. Overall, that works out to 14.13% of every dollar of profit.

This applies before income tax. If you’re in the 12% bracket, for example, take off roughly another 10% of profit after the deduction for half of the self-employment tax.

Calculator: Which Side Hustles Pay You the Most?

First, pick a side hustle from the list, or type in your own rate, hours and fees. Then the calculator shows your real pay per hour and your monthly take-home pay. It also shows what a lower fee or fewer unpaid hours would add.

Presets use US median pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), each platform’s published fee, and typical unpaid time. Self-employment tax follows the IRS rule (owed once yearly profit reaches $400). Income tax is a simple flat estimate, not tax advice. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Next, try changing just one number at a time. Most people find that cutting unpaid hours or leaving a platform raises their pay more than charging a higher rate.

The Best Side Hustles That Pay Well, One by One

Now let's look at what sits behind each group in the ranking, and how to move up a tier.

Skilled desk work: side hustles that pay $21 to $27 an hour

Web development, editing, marketing and writing take the top four places. That's because their rates start high, their costs stay tiny, and you can work from anywhere. However, they face the biggest change from AI tools, which now handle many simple writing and coding tasks.

Still, the pay holds up best for people who sell judgment, not just output. For instance, a writer who knows insurance or a developer who fixes checkout problems can still charge well. Also, our guide to artificial intelligence in business explains which tasks companies now automate.

Bookkeeping and virtual assistant work: $15 to $17 an hour

Bookkeeping ranks sixth even though its typical rate is lower than graphic design's. That's because most bookkeepers work for regular direct clients, so there's no platform fee and little unpaid time. In fact, it keeps 71% of its rate, the second-best share in the ranking.

Virtual assistant work follows the same pattern, too. Once a client trusts you, the hours become steady and easy to plan.

Handyman jobs, personal training and babysitting: about $13 to $14

These local, in-person hustles all land in the middle, although for different reasons. Babysitting has the lowest rate on the list, yet it keeps 77% of it, more than any other hustle. After all, there are no fees, no costs and very little unpaid time.

In contrast, handyman work and personal training pay more per paid hour. But travel between jobs, buying materials and finding clients eat into the gap.

Tutoring and pet sitting: side hustles that pay only if you go direct

These two show the cost of a platform most clearly. For example, tutoring through Wyzant pays about $10.39 a real hour. Finding the same students yourself, however, raises that to about $13.97, a 34% raise for the same lessons.

Likewise, pet sitting through Rover pays about $8.16 an hour, while direct clients take it to about $10.36. Of course, a platform is a fine way to get your first reviews. After that, though, every repeat client you move to direct booking is worth real money.

Rideshare and photography: the side hustles that pay the least

Rideshare looks fine at $18.25 an hour, until you count waiting time and the car. Once you count both, it falls to about $7.60, just above the minimum wage. Then, after income tax, it drops below it.

Photography falls even further, to about $7.07. That's because most of a photographer's work happens off the clock: editing, marketing, travel and replying to inquiries. On top of that, gear costs add up fast. If you love it, specialize in high-value work such as weddings or headshots, and batch your editing.

How to Make Your Side Hustles Pay More

You can't change the tax rate. Still, the other three leaks are yours to fix. So here's what moves the number most, in order.

  1. Move repeat clients off platforms. Because fees vanish, this is often a 20% to 34% raise overnight. Check each platform's rules first, since some ban moving clients you met there.
  2. Cut unpaid hours. Use templates for proposals and batch your admin into one slot a week. Also, say no to tiny jobs with long back-and-forth.
  3. Raise your rate for new clients. Even so, $5 more an hour adds about $3 of real pay at the end.
  4. Sell packages, not hours. That way, a fixed price for a set result rewards you for getting faster.
  5. Track your costs. Similarly, our list of one-person business expenses shows the small subscriptions that quietly add up.

Do Side Hustles Pay Enough to Be Worth It?

It depends on what you compare them with. For instance, if your day job pays $25 an hour after tax, a $14 side hustle is a poor trade for your evenings. In that case, asking for a raise may pay more. Then our guide on how to negotiate a salary raise has the scripts.

On the other hand, a side hustle can be worth more than its hourly pay. For example, it can build a skill, test a business idea, or give you a way out of a job you dislike. If that's your plan, read our guide on whether you should quit your job before you jump.

Finally, watch your energy. Extra hours on top of a full-time job wear people down quickly. If you're always tired, our burnout or boredom self-test can help you spot the warning signs early.

Taxes on Side Hustle Pay: What to Set Aside

Side hustles that pay well can still bring a nasty surprise in April. Luckily, in the US, the rules are simple once you know them.

  • Self-employment tax of 15.3% applies once your net earnings from all side work reach $400 in a year.
  • Income tax applies to all of it, even without a 1099 form. Specifically, the IRS gig economy guide explains what to report.
  • Estimated tax payments are due four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more (IRS). Alternatively, you can raise the withholding at your day job to cover it.
  • Business miles are deductible at 72.5 cents a mile in 2026 (IRS). That's why rideshare drivers often owe less tax than their profit suggests.

As a rule of thumb, move 25% to 30% of every payment into a separate savings account the day it arrives. Then, when April comes, the money for the bill is already waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Side Hustles That Pay

What side hustles pay the most per hour?

In our ranking, web development pays the most, at about $27 a real hour after fees, unpaid time, costs and self-employment tax. Editing, marketing and writing follow at $21 to $23. All four sell a skill at a desk, so their costs stay very low.

How much do side hustles really pay compared with the advertised rate?

The typical hustle in our ranking keeps about 57% of its advertised rate. So a good rule is to take 40% off any quoted hourly rate. In short, platform fees, unpaid time, costs and self-employment tax make up the gap.

Are there easy side hustles that pay well?

Babysitting and pet sitting are easy to start, but they pay $8 to $13 a real hour. The side hustles that pay well usually need a skill, such as bookkeeping, editing or web development. Even so, you can start small and learn on the job.

Do I have to pay tax on side hustle money?

Yes, in the US all side hustle income is taxable, even if you never get a 1099 form. You also owe 15.3% self-employment tax once your net earnings reach $400 in a year. Set aside 25% to 30% of each payment to be safe.

Is it better to use a platform or find clients directly?

Platforms help you get your first clients and reviews, but they cost 10% to 25% of your pay. In contrast, direct clients raise your real pay right away. For example, direct tutoring pays about $14 a real hour, compared with $10 through a 25% platform.

Is rideshare driving worth it as a side hustle?

At typical pay, rideshare works out to about $7.60 a real hour once you count car costs and waiting time. That's close to the $7.25 federal minimum wage. It can still make sense if you need fully flexible hours or drive an old, paid-off car.

How many hours a week should a side hustle take?

Generally, most people manage 5 to 10 hours a week alongside a full-time job. Count unpaid time as well, since it often adds 20% to 30%. If you need a set amount each month, the calculator shows how many hours that takes.

What about selling crafts on Etsy?

Etsy charges $0.20 to list an item, a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment fee of about 3% plus $0.25 in the US (Etsy). After materials and making time, few sellers earn a steady hourly rate, so we left it out of the ranking. You can still test your own shop with the calculator by adding your fees and material costs.
